Clinicians’ and Researchers’ Perspectives on a New Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Exacerbation Definition: Rome Wasn’t Built in a Day

The current definitions and severity classifications for exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are imperfect, leading to the development of the Rome proposal. The Rome definition and severity classification have been adopted by the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD), but validation studies are needed. A survey of clinicians and researchers found good support for the Rome proposal, but a lack of awareness and concerns about practicality.
