Clinicohematologic and molecular response of essential thrombocythemia patients treated with pegylated interferon-α: a multi-center study of the German Study Group-Myeloproliferative Neoplasms (GSG-MPN)

Essential thrombocythemia (ET) can progress to secondary myelofibrosis or acute myeloid leukemia, making prevention important. Hydroxyurea and anagrelide are used to reduce the risk of complications, but long-term use is associated with side effects. Interferon-α may prevent disease progression and has shown molecular responses in some ET patients. A retrospective analysis of 127 ET patients treated with pegIFN showed high efficacy in achieving a clinicohematologic response, low rates of adverse events, vascular complications, and disease progression. The study supports the use of pegIFN in ET patients and highlights the difficulty of distinguishing ET from prefibrotic/early primary MF.
