The study has discovered that the protein Clusterin (CLU) can protect against the harmful effects of extracellular histones, which are released during extensive cell death and are known to promote inflammation and cell death in sepsis. The team found that CLU binds to circulating histones and reduces their inflammatory, thrombotic, and cytotoxic properties. In patients with sepsis, lower levels of plasma CLU were associated with increased mortality. Mouse models also showed improved survival with CLU supplementation.
