
The study discovered that clusterin (CLU) plays a critical role in modulating hyperinflammation observed in conditions like sepsis. The study found that CLU can bind to and neutralize histones, released during tissue injury and cell death, and are known to contribute to the severity of critical illnesses. In patients with sepsis, CLU levels were significantly lower in nonsurvivors compared to survivors, and CLU supplementation neutralized the cytotoxic and inflammatory effects of patient plasma. The findings suggest CLU as a potential therapeutic target to control dysregulated inflammatory responses in critical illnesses like sepsis.
