A comprehensive meta-analysis reveals significant cognitive impairment in individuals experiencing first-episode psychosis (FEP) prior to antipsychotic treatment initiation. The study, encompassing 50 research works and over 2,600 FEP patients, highlights pronounced deficits across various cognitive domains compared to healthy controls. Moreover, FEP subjects exhibit considerable variability in cognitive function, underscoring the necessity of identifying those with severe impairments to enhance outcomes through targeted interventions like cognitive remediation. These findings emphasize early cognitive assessment's critical role in improving clinical outcomes for psychosis patients.
