This study investigates the combined impact of alcohol consumption and metabolic syndrome (MetS) on liver dysfunction in an elderly population in Zhejiang Province, China. It reveals a heightened risk of liver dysfunction among females, younger individuals, rural residents, and those with minimal education, single status, or MetS. Risk increases with the number of MetS components and frequency of alcohol consumption. Notably, a prolonged period of abstinence (≥ 5 years) appears to mitigate this risk. Findings stress the importance of moderating alcohol intake, adopting a healthy lifestyle, and managing MetS components, particularly triglyceride levels, to prevent liver dysfunction.
