New Therapy Enhances Vision in Submacular Hemorrhage

In a study of 14 patients with submacular hemorrhage (SMH), Pars Plana Vitrectomy (PPV) combined with low-dose recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (rt-PA) and intravitreal Conbercept was evaluated. Significant improvement in best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was observed at 7 days, 1 month, 3 months, 4 months, and 6 months post-treatment, with BCVA reaching a peak improvement at 6 months. Complete resolution of subfoveal hemorrhage was achieved in all cases, with hemorrhage absorption within one month and regression by 3 months. The treatment did not cause rt-PA-related retinal toxicity, although two cases of age-related macular degeneration developed discoid scars. This combined approach shows promise in improving vision and anatomical outcomes in SMH therapy.

A review suggests that oxidative stress may stabilise HIF-1α in alveolar macrophages despite normal oxygen levels in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. ROS-HIF-1α crosstalk could reprogram macrophages toward profibrotic activity and impair lung homeostasis, linking environmental exposures to fibrosis progression and highlighting a potential pathway for future therapeutic research.

A systematic review of 28 studies found consistent links between poor sleep quality, obstructive sleep apnea and nocturia with female lower urinary tract symptoms. Women with overactive bladder or urinary incontinence also reported poorer sleep. Findings suggest sleep and urinary symptoms may influence each other, supporting consideration of sleep health in LUTS assessment.

A prospective Australian multicentre cohort of 275 families found that trio prenatal exome sequencing identified pathogenic or likely pathogenic variants in 31.6% of fetuses with structural anomalies after an uninformative chromosome microarray. Variants of uncertain significance occurred in 4.4% and incidental findings in 1.5%, supporting pES as an important antenatal diagnostic tool.

NEUROLOGY
