Comparative Efficacy of Lasers and Surgery for Oral Leukoplakia: A Network Meta-Analysis

A study examined treatment modalities for oral leukoplakia (OLK), a prevalent precancerous lesion. Analyzing 11 randomized controlled trials involving 917 patients and 1138 lesions, it compared the efficacy of lasers and surgical excision. Er,Cr:YSGG laser demonstrated significantly lower recurrence rates than other interventions such as CO2 laser and electrocautery. Moreover, Er: YAG and Er:Cr: YSGG lasers effectively minimised bleeding and pain, respectively. The study suggests that lasers, particularly Er: YAG, Er:Cr: YSGG, and CO2 combined with photodynamic therapy, present promising alternatives to surgery for OLK, potentially reducing recurrence and enhancing patient comfort.
