Comparative Risks of Infection With Belimumab Versus Oral Immunosuppressants in Patients With Nonrenal Systemic Lupus Erythematosus

A comprehensive study compared the risk of infection between belimumab and oral immunosuppressants for treating systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Utilizing US electronic health records from 2011 to 2021, they examined patients without lupus nephritis initiating belimumab, azathioprine, methotrexate, or mycophenolate. The study employed hypothetical target trials to estimate cumulative incidence and hazard ratios for severe infections and hospitalizations. Results showed that belimumab had lower risks of serious infections than azathioprine, methotrexate, and mycophenolate, without significant differences in traumatic injury risks. This study's findings provide valuable insights into SLE treatment considerations.
