Comparing BPD Definitions: How Well They Predict Long-Term Lung Function in Premature Children

This retrospective study of 138 children with prematurity and bronchopulmonary dysplasia compared three major BPD definitions—2001 NHLBI, 2018 NICHD, and 2019 NRN—to evaluate their ability to predict long-term lung function. The newer NICHD and NRN definitions identified children with significantly lower pulmonary function, while the older NHLBI definition showed better severity stratification. Findings highlight the need for refined BPD criteria to improve prediction and management of long-term outcomes.
