Comparing Cardiovascular Effects of GLP-1 Receptor Agonists to Other Diabetes Treatments in NAFLD Patients

A recent study investigated the effects of glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RA) on cardiovascular events and mortality in individuals with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and type 2 diabetes. Analyzing data from over 2.8 million patients, researchers found that GLP-1RAs were comparable to sodium–glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors in reducing new-onset heart failure, major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE), cerebrovascular events, and mortality rates. However, when compared to other glucose-lowering drugs, GLP-1RAs showed lower rates of adverse cardiovascular events and all-cause mortality. These findings suggest GLP-1RAs could benefit individuals with NAFLD and type 2 diabetes, particularly in reducing cardiovascular risks.
