A randomized controlled trial was conducted to investigate whether using ST analysis of the fetal electrocardiogram (STan) in addition to continuous cardiotocography (CTG) could reduce emergency Cesarean section (EmCS) rates. The study included 970 women at a tertiary maternity hospital in Adelaide, Australia. Participants were randomly assigned to receive CTG+STan or CTG alone. The primary outcome, EmCS, occurred in similar proportions in both groups (22.2% in CTG+STan and 22.1% in CTG alone). The study concluded that the addition of STan did not reduce the EmCS rate, potentially due to a lack of statistical power to detect smaller differences.
