Concurrent Validity of the IOPI and Tongueometer Orofacial Strength Measurement Devices

This study validated the Tongueometer, a newly-available and lower-cost orofacial manometer, by comparing its readings with the Iowa Oral Performance Instrument (IOPI), the current gold standard. Three experimental conditions were examined. The results showed a median absolute difference of 2.4 kPa in pressure readings between the IOPI and Tongueometer setups. However, there was substantial agreement between the two devices in terms of pressure readings for both the full setups, tongue bulbs, and manometers. These findings suggest that the Tongueometer could be a valid and cost-effective alternative for objectively measuring orofacial strength in clinical settings.
