Daily consumption of sugar-sweetened drinks increases the risk of liver cancer and chronic liver disease mortality among postmenopausal women, according to a US study of 98,786 participants. The Women's Health Initiative (WHI) study monitored over 20 years, revealed a 85% higher liver cancer risk and a 65% higher risk of chronic liver disease mortality for those consuming one or more sugar-sweetened beverages daily. This is the first study linking sugar-sweetened drink intake to chronic liver disease mortality, suggesting a need for public health measures.
