A study using data from Kaohsiung Medical University Hospital examined comorbidities' impact on prolonged mechanical ventilation (PMV) risk in COPD patients. Analyzing 3,744 COPD patients diagnosed between January 1, 2012, and December 31, 2020, it found 1.6% required PMV. COPD patients had a higher adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) of 2.21 for PMV than non-COPD patients. Significant risk factors included diabetes mellitus, hypertension, dyslipidemia, congestive heart failure, coronary artery disease, stroke, chronic kidney disease, and dementia, with aHRs from 3.02 to 6.44.
