CSOM Study Highlights Biofilms and Antibiotic Resistance

Middle ear inflammation was involved in Chronic Suppurative Otitis Media (CSOM). A key role in CSOM was played by biofilms, bacterial clusters enhancing antibiotic resistance. Biofilm-producing bacteria and their antibiotic sensitivity were examined in a study. Out of 648 samples, 500 were found culture-positive, with Pseudomonas (62.6%) and MRSA (13.8%) most common. Biofilms were found in 350 isolates, with Pseudomonas leading. Gentamicin was most effective; multi-drug resistance was prevalent. Screening for biofilms was recommended for proper treatment.
