The study describes the design and results of the Deaf Weight Wise (DWW) trial, a community-based participatory research that aims to develop an evidence-based weight-control program for Deaf people. The study enrolled 104 Deaf adults aged 40 to 70 years with BMI of 25 to 45, randomized to immediate intervention or delayed intervention. Results showed significant weight loss in the immediate-intervention arm compared to the delayed intervention arm at 6 months, with high participant engagement and completion rates. DWW is a culturally appropriate and language-accessible behavioral weight loss intervention that is successful with Deaf American Sign Language users.
