A questionnaire-based descriptive study was conducted in 52 perinatal centers throughout Japan in 2020, comparing the incidence of maternal transport and preterm delivery rates every month after the COVID-19 spread in 2020 with those in 2019. The study found that the maternal transport rate due to preterm labor was lower in April 2020 compared to 2019. The maternal transport rate during the emergency state decreased in both non-emergency-declared and emergency-declared prefectures. However, there was no significant difference in the preterm delivery rate between 2020 and 2019, regardless of the prefecture and gestational period. The study suggests that the declaration of emergency status due to COVID-19 in Japan reduced maternal transport due to preterm labor but did not reduce preterm delivery.

Current care emphasizes diagnosis, limited targeted testing, disease monitoring and stepwise treatment, beginning with second-generation H1-antihistamines and up-dosing when needed. Omalizumab and newer therapies such as dupilumab and remibrutinib expand options for refractory disease, while future care may be guided by biomarkers and disease endotypes.

A study found that the peak amplitude of infraslow oscillations in sleep spindle activity was significantly reduced in people with Alzheimer’s disease, while frequency and bandwidth remained preserved. However, limited comparative evidence highlights the need for species-specific, high-quality randomized trials.

A retrospective study of 33 women with postpartum hemorrhage during cesarean delivery found that uterine compression sutures achieved hemostasis in 69.7% of cases. Additional treatment was required in 30.3%, including embolization or emergency hysterectomy. Suspected placenta accreta spectrum was significantly more common among women needing escalation (60.0% vs. 8.7%; p=0.004).

ICS–SABA reduced asthma exacerbations and corticosteroid use without increasing adverse events in a five-RCT meta-analysis.

A meta-analysis of five randomized controlled trials found that as-needed ICS–SABA significantly reduced asthma exacerbations compared with SABA-only reliever therapy. ICS–SABA lowered exacerbation rates and the risk of experiencing at least one exacerbation by 31%, while extending time to first exacerbation and reducing systemic corticosteroid exposure by about 39 mg, without increasing adverse events.

Cataract was the leading cause, followed by trauma-related ocular disease, glaucoma, and corneal opacity.
