Defining and using immune archetypes to classify and treat cancer

The tumor microenvironment (TME) plays a critical role in tumor growth and can have varying immune states. Previous research has often viewed the TME as a singular entity requiring therapeutic intervention. However, recent studies suggest the existence of multiple immune states within the TME across different cancers. This perspective proposes that there are approximately 12 dominant immune archetypes present in tumors, characterized by specific collections of cells and gene-expression profiles. Understanding the evolutionary origins and functions of these archetypes can help identify vulnerabilities that can be targeted for cancer treatment, while considering potential adverse effects for patients.
