
The study investigated the effect of the duration of hemodynamically significant patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) on cerebral oxygenation, brain growth, and neurodevelopmental outcomes in preterm infants who underwent surgical ductal closure. The study included 90 infants born at <30 weeks of gestational age, who had magnetic resonance imaging, cerebral oxygen saturation monitoring, and Bayley III developmental tests at 2 years of corrected age. The results showed that a prolonged duration of PDA negatively impacted cerebellar growth and cognitive and motor outcomes at 2 years of age. The study suggests that the duration of PDA may have long-term effects on the neurodevelopment of preterm infants.
