Delivery room intubation and neurodevelopment among extremely preterm infants

The impact of delivery room intubation (DRI) on neurodevelopmental outcomes in extremely preterm infants (24–27 weeks gestation) was studied retrospectively. Of 4397 infants, 3703 were intubated in the delivery room, and 694 were not. Infants with DRI had a higher risk of neurodevelopmental impairment (NDI) at age 3 (32.4% vs. 23.3%). However, no significant differences were observed in secondary outcomes. The study suggests an association between DRI and increased NDI risk in extremely preterm infants.
