Denosumab Lowers Type 2 Diabetes Risk and Improves Health Outcomes

A study investigated the impact of denosumab on type 2 diabetes (T2D) incidence and long-term health outcomes in patients previously without T2D or cancer. The study included 331,375 patients who compared denosumab (n = 45,854) to bisphosphonates (n = 285,521). Denosumab use was associated with a 17% lower risk of incident T2D over five years and significant reductions in all-cause mortality and foot ulceration. Meta-analysis of prior studies confirmed a consistent risk reduction in T2D incidence with denosumab. These findings suggest potential benefits of denosumab beyond osteoporosis treatment, influencing future guidelines for managing osteoporosis in patients at risk of T2D.
