The purpose of this study was to examine intraductal carcinoma of the prostate and significant cancer in patients with small tumor volume (less than 0.5 cm3) in prostatectomy specimens. The data of 639 patients was retrospectively reviewed, and 83 patients with small tumor volume were identified (52% had significant cancer, and 6% had intraductal carcinoma). The study found that the number of positive biopsy cores was a predictor of significant cancer and that tumor volume was correlated with the International Society of Urological Pathology Grade Group and the presence of intraductal carcinoma. The results suggest that intraductal carcinoma can be present even in cases with small tumor volume and that grade group and intraductal carcinoma are positively correlated with tumor volume.
