Deuterated Azobenzene Photoswitches Enhance Biological Control

The study demonstrated that deuterated azobenzene photoswitches significantly enhanced the performance of photopharmacological molecules. Results showed improvements in light sensitivity, with higher molar extinction coefficients, increased photoswitch efficiency through greater photoisomerization quantum yields, and faster kinetics of photoisomerization. The synthesized deuterated azobenzene-based ligands enabled optimized optical control of ion channel and G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) functions in live cells. These advancements establish a promising avenue for the widespread application of deuterated photoswitches in biological research, facilitating precise remote control of cellular functions.
