Developing and testing compassion‐based self‐help for people living with psoriasis

Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune disease that includes scaly patches on the skin. The disease occurs in 2–3% of the population and may affect 125 million people worldwide. In addition, there is an increased risk of depression in people with psoriasis. The study developed two booklets and audio recordings of compassion‐based self‐help exercises. One of the booklets set out to improve people’s ability to self‐sooth. The other booklet set out to help people develop mindfulness, or the ability to pay attention on purpose, in the present moment, and without judgement. The study findings indicate that psychological support aimed at increasing compassion towards oneself can be helpful in reducing feelings of distress associated with psoriasis.
