Development and clinical validation of real‐time artificial intelligence diagnostic companion for fetal ultrasound examination

Researchers developed a decision support system (DSS) that uses real-time ultrasound data to suggest the next phenotypic features to assess in order to diagnose rare diseases. The study included 549 perinatal phenotypes from two referral centers in France and the UK, with at least one visible anomaly on fetal ultrasound. The DSS was assessed retrospectively using both the whole phenotype as a single input and a stepwise input of phenotypic features. The DSS was found to have high specificity (94% and 96%) and sensitivity (99% and 84%) using the whole phenotype and stepwise input, respectively. The study suggests that the DSS can improve prenatal care for ultrasound-based diagnosis of rare diseases.
