A cohort study conducted tracked the progression of diabetic retinopathy (DR) in pregnant women with type 1 or type 2 diabetes. 105 women underwent eye examinations during pregnancy and up to 12 months postpartum. Results indicated that 23.8% of women experienced DR progression during this period, with 9.5% developing sight-threatening disease. Risk factors for progression included type 1 diabetes (RR 4.96), pre-existing DR (RR 4.54), and elevated systolic blood pressure (adjusted RR 2.49). Progression observed during pregnancy often persisted or worsened postpartum, while regression was rare. These findings underscore the importance of monitoring and potentially treating DR in pregnant women with diabetes to mitigate the risk of vision loss.
