Diagnostic Accuracy in Evaluation of Attenuation of Pulmonary Thrombus on Noncontrast Computed Tomography Scan

This study aimed to evaluate the role of noncontrast computed tomography (NCCT) in diagnosing pulmonary thromboembolism (PTE). Using a single-center retrospective analysis, 50 subjects underwent imaging for suspected PTE. Thrombus identification relied on differences in attenuation between thrombus and blood pool. Results showed a mean difference in attenuation of 34.07 Hounsfield units (HU), with an optimal cut-off of 20 HU for PTE diagnosis. NCCT demonstrated 89.47% sensitivity and 83.33% specificity. While computed tomography pulmonary angiography (CTPA) remains the gold standard, NCCT offers a radiation and contrast-reducing alternative for PTE diagnosis.
