Diesel Emissions Heighten Alzheimer's Disease Risk by Impairing Cellular Defenses

The study explored the effects of diesel emissions (DE) on olfactory mucosa (OM) cells from healthy individuals and Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients. Results revealed a significantly stronger response to DE in AD OM cells, suggesting increased susceptibility. DNA methylation analysis identified altered patterns, revealing new targets for DE exposure. These findings were further validated using data from the Rotterdam Study, which highlighted the role of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) signaling in the cellular response to air pollution. The study identifies biomarkers of air pollution exposure and suggests that AD patients may face enhanced risks due to impaired cellular defense mechanisms.
