Dietary Glycemic Index and Glycemic Load and DNA Methylation in Children and Adolescents of Different Body Sizes

Meta-analyses of epigenome-wide association studies (EWAS) examined the links between dietary glycemic index (GI) and glycemic load (GL) and blood DNA methylation (DNAm) in children and adolescents (N = 1,187). Positive associations were found between dietary GL and DNAm of cg20274553, annotated to WDR27. Distinct CpGs were identified in normal-weight and overweight/obese strata, with the latter showing associations with genes linked to impaired metabolism. The findings suggest that high-GI/GL diets may impact epigenetic gene regulation, particularly in individuals with increased BMI.
