In a study on memory and aging, researchers found that modifiable dementia risk factors like hypertension and obesity were prevalent in African American (AA) and non-Hispanic white (nHW) participants. Surprisingly, these factors were not directly linked to cognitive impairment. However, depression significantly increased the odds of cognitive impairment in both groups and uniquely accelerated decline in AA participants. Notably, fewer AA participants reported antidepressant use than their nHW counterparts. The study emphasizes the importance of addressing modifiable risk factors and optimizing depression screening to enhance cognitive outcomes, especially in diverse populations.
