Distinct Phenotypes in Heart Failure with Preserved Ejection Fraction: Impact of Atrial Fibrillation

The study investigates the association between atrial fibrillation (AF) and heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF), examining myocardial remodelling and mechanics. Participants underwent comprehensive phenotyping and were followed for outcomes. The AF group was older, with higher left atrial volumes, worse left atrial and ventricular function, and altered fibro-inflammatory biomarker expression. Three distinct phenotypic clusters were identified, with one showing poorer outcomes regardless of AF presence. Findings suggest AF in HFpEF is linked to specific structural, functional, and biomarker alterations.
