The study investigates the relationship between diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) parameters and the biochemical composition of degenerative intervertebral disc nucleus pulposus tissue. DTI measured fractional anisotropy (FA) and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values, correlating these with Pfirrmann grading, aquaporin expression, and the content of glycosaminoglycans (GAG) and collagen. FA values were positively correlated with collagen and negatively with GAG, while ADC values showed the opposite. The approach could aid in diagnosing and assessing treatment efficacy for disc degeneration.
