Early life surfactant protein-D levels in broncho-alveolar lavage fluids of extremely preterm neonates

The study investigated the impact of Surfactant Protein-D (SP-D) in extremely preterm neonates. SP-D levels were measured within the first 3 hours of life and linked to clinical outcomes. The protein was found to be higher with increasing gestational age and elevated in cases with chorioamnionitis. Lower SP-D levels were associated with bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) and shorter hospital stays. SP-D also correlated with invasive ventilation and total sPLA2 activity.
