Early Weight-Bearing Enhances Postoperative Recovery in Head and Neck Reconstruction with Fibula Free Flap Surgery

A retrospective cohort study assessed 152 patients undergoing fibula free flap surgery for head and neck reconstruction. Early weight-bearing (EWB) on postoperative day 1 was linked to shorter hospital stays, higher rates of home discharge, and fewer donor-site complications. Conversely, delayed weight-bearing correlated with an increased risk of pneumonia. These findings emphasize the significance of EWB in optimizing recovery after fibula free flap surgery. Understanding the timing's impact on outcomes is crucial given the current variability across institutions.
