Obesity increases the risk of pregnancy complications and maternal hyperglycemia. Therefore, the Institute of Medicine developed guidelines for gestational weight gain (GWG) targets for women with overweight/obese. Still, it is unclear whether exceeding these targets adversely affects maternal glucose metabolism. These data demonstrate that gaining more weight during pregnancy than the Institute of Medicine recommended is associated with functional effects on glucose metabolism.
