Effect of furosemide in the treatment of high-altitude pulmonary edema

A recent study investigated the effectiveness of furosemide in treating High-Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE), a severe condition triggered by rapid ascent to high altitudes. Results from 273 patients revealed that those treated with furosemide exhibited a significant decrease in CT severity scores compared to those without furosemide. Subgroup analysis indicated a correlation between longer furosemide use and greater improvement in lung CT severity scores. However, no significant differences were observed in hospital stay length or in-hospital mortality rates between the two groups. The findings suggest that while furosemide aids in alleviating pulmonary edema in HAPE patients, further research is warranted to ascertain its impact on prognosis.
