This case-control study investigated the incidence of neonatal hearing loss among infants born to diabetic mothers. The study included 86 neonates of diabetic mothers and 86 neonates of non-diabetic mothers as controls. The hearing status of neonates was assessed using Distortion Product Otoacoustic Emission (DPOAE) and Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR) tests. The results revealed a significantly higher percentage of abnormal hearing outcomes in neonates of diabetic mothers, with 98% showing moderate to severe bilateral hearing loss, compared to controls with mild bilateral hearing loss. The study emphasizes the importance of better glycemic control in diabetic pregnancies and the need for early and mandatory hearing screening in newborns of diabetic mothers.
