Effect of mechanical insufflation-exsufflation for ineffective cough on weaning duration in diseases of the peripheral or central nervous system (MEDINE): study protocol for a randomised controlled trial in a neurological weaning centre

Neurological patients facing impaired cough can now find hope in a new treatment. An exploratory study on mechanical insufflation-exsufflation (MI-E) shows promising results for those on ventilators. The randomized controlled trial compares MI-E to standard care. The primary endpoint is the duration of mechanical ventilation until successful weaning. Secondary outcomes include the rate of successful weaning, pneumonia incidence, mortality, decannulation rate, ICU stay length, and Glasgow Coma Scale score. If successful, this treatment could improve the lives of countless patients with neurological or neurosurgical diseases.
