This study investigated the impact of tadalafil, a phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitor, on right ventricular systolic function in adults with congenital heart disease and systemic right ventricles. It involved 100 participants randomly assigned to receive either tadalafil or a placebo. After three years of therapy, the researchers assessed changes in right ventricular end-systolic volume, right ventricular ejection fraction, exercise capacity, and NT-proBNP concentration. The results showed no significant changes in right ventricular end-systolic volumes or the pre-specified secondary endpoints between the tadalafil and placebo groups. The study concluded that further research is needed to identify effective treatments for improving ventricular function in this population.
