The study investigated the effectiveness of different nasal irrigation solutions (saline, povidone-iodine 1%, and a mixture of hypertonic alkaline and povidone-iodine 1%) against SARS-CoV-2. A randomized clinical trial was conducted on 120 adult outpatients who tested positive for the virus. The study found that all groups showed a significant reduction in nasopharyngeal viral load (NVL) from day 0 to day 3 and day 5. However, the group that received the mixture of hypertonic alkaline and povidone-iodine 1% showed the most significant reduction in NVL. The study concludes that nasal irrigation with this mixture was the most effective in reducing NVL.
