Effect of tobacco use on Zenker's diverticulotomy outcomes

A retrospective study assessed whether tobacco use impacts clinical outcomes in patients undergoing Zenker's diverticulotomy (ZD). The study found no significant link between tobacco use and postoperative complications such as bleeding, perforation, emergency department visits, unplanned readmissions, or recurrence. Even after adjusting for age, sex, and surgical approach, tobacco use did not increase the risk of recurrence. Although the median time to recurrence was shorter in active smokers (1.2 years) compared to former smokers (8.7 years) and non-smokers (11.5 years), this was not statistically significant. These findings indicate that tobacco use doesn't appear to significantly impact clinical outcomes after ZD, but there might be a trend toward shorter recurrence times in active smokers.
