Effective Endodontic Treatment Reduces Serum Levels of Cardiovascular Disease Risk Biomarkers

A recent study explored the serum biomarkers of inflammation two years after non-surgical root canal re-treatment (Re-RCT) and peri-apical surgery (PS). Results showed a recall rate of 56.9%, with a 100% radiographic success rate. Among the cases, 56.8% exhibited complete healing, while 43.2% showed signs of recovery. Higher levels of matrix metalloprotease 2 (MMP2) were found in the healing group. Serum levels of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA), and MMP-2 significantly decreased (p ≤ 0.001), while other biomarkers increased two years post-treatment. HbA1C, TC, LDL, and HDL also reduced significantly. The study suggests that hs-CRP, ADMA, and MMP-2 could be predictive biomarkers for successful Re-RCT and PS.
