This study aimed to investigate the safety and effectiveness of prenatal valacyclovir therapy in pregnancies with maternal CMV infection. The study reviewed eight studies involving 620 women and found that valacyclovir therapy reduced the risk of congenital CMV infection in pregnancies with maternal CMV infection. The risk reduction was particularly significant when the infection occurred in the first trimester of pregnancy. However, the quality of evidence was very low, and further research is needed to determine the impact of valacyclovir on symptomatic fetal or neonatal infection.
