Effectiveness of Chemical Pleurodesis Using Doxycycline in Malignant and Nonmalignant Pleural Disorders

A study reveals doxycycline's efficacy in chemical pleurodesis for treating malignant pleural effusion and recurrent pneumothorax. Administering a single 500 mg dose to 23 patients with malignant pleural effusion and nine with refractory pneumothorax showed successful outcomes within two weeks. However, four hepatic hydrothorax patients exhibited no response. Common adverse events included chest pain and fever. The findings suggest doxycycline as a safe and effective alternative to talc for chemical pleurodesis in certain cases, though further research may be needed for hepatic hydrothorax.
