The study examined the impact of elevated fasting free fatty acids (FFAs) and glucose on β-cell function and glucose metabolism. The study found that increased FFAs and glucose overnight impaired the dynamic component of the β-cell response to glucose, suggesting that these metabolic changes can deplete preformed insulin granules in the β-cell. However, the experiment also revealed that acute changes in FFAs and glucose concentrations during prediabetes did not significantly alter islet function or glucose metabolism.
