Effects of COVID-19 time on the development of pre-impaired glucose tolerance state in children and adolescents with overweight and obesity

A study of 532 children and adolescents with obesity and overweight revealed a significant increase in 2-hour plasma glucose (2h PG) values during the COVID-19 pandemic compared to the previous 13 years. The pandemic group showed higher prevalence of subjects with pre-impaired glucose tolerance (pre-IGT) and elevated waist circumference and fasting glucose levels. These findings suggest a correlation between the pandemic and increased risk of developing IGT due to impaired β-cell function and insulin sensitivity in children.
