Effects of High-Dose Docosahexaenoic Acid on Behaviour in Children Born at Less Than 29 Weeks' Gestation

This study assessed whether meeting the neonatal DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) requirement through supplementation improves behavioural functioning in children born at less than 29 weeks' gestation. The follow-up involved 731 children who received DHA or a control soy-oil emulsion until 36 weeks' postmenstrual age. At age 5, parent-rated behavioural outcomes showed no significant difference between groups. No adverse effects were observed with DHA supplementation. The study concludes that providing DHA at the estimated in utero dose for preterm infants did not enhance behavioural functioning at age 5, and no negative effects were identified.
