Effects of Moderate‐ to High‐Impact Exercise Training on Bone Structure Across the Lifespan

A recent systematic review and meta-analysis have shed light on the potential benefits of moderate-to-high-impact exercise on bone health. This comprehensive study, spanning four databases and encompassing 28 randomized controlled trials, revealed that impact exercise could enhance volumetric bone mineral density (vBMD) and bone structure. The findings demonstrated that impact exercise improved trabecular vBMD at the distal tibia, total vBMD at the proximal femur, and cortical thickness at the mid/proximal radius. Subgroup analyses revealed variations among age and gender groups. In adults, impact exercise decreased mid/proximal tibia cortical vBMD, while postmenopausal women experienced improvements in distal tibia trabecular vBMD.
