In a 12-week behavioral weight-management program, a study compared the impact of non-nutritive sweetened (NNS) beverages versus water on weight loss. The ongoing trial involved 493 adults with a BMI of 27 to 35 kg/m2 who regularly consumed cold beverages. Results showed that weight loss was equivalent in both groups (-5.6 vs. -5.8 kg). Secondary outcomes like waist circumference reduction and glycated hemoglobin favored NNS beverages, while sweetener consumption reduction favored water. The study suggests that NNS beverages can be a viable alternative to water for weight loss during a behavioral weight-management program.
